All electrical installation work, be it a new connection or an alteration to an existing installation, must by law be certified by a suitably qualified and registered electrical contractor. This certification must then be submitted to Safe Electric Ireland (The national regulator) for approval.
Periodic Inspection Reports
These are important inspection reports which are carried out from time to time on premises and installations only by registered electrical contractors. They are an assessment of the condition of the wiring, switches, sockets, lighting fixtures and all fixed components of an electrical installation. Commercial and rented premises especially, must be inspected in this manner on a regular basis to ensure that all electrical safety standards are being met.
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)
This is a visual inspection and test of portable or plug-in appliances. Class 1 equipment including stationary and IT equipment should be tested every 48 months. Moveable equipment such as extension leads and portable equipment should be tested every 24 months. This test is particularly important for commercial premises such as hotels, offices etc.
